This Valentine's Day, Being Single Has Its Perks!

Happy Valentine’s Day! If you're happily loved-up and excited to celebrate this most romantic of holidays, congratulations!

But we also know Valentine’s Day isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. The abundance of hearts and flowers can be disheartening, annoying, and at times headache-inducing, particularly for people who don’t have someone to celebrate with. It sometimes feels like being coupled up is the be-all and end-all, but whether you’re happily single or are waiting to be swept off your feet, here are some reasons to love single life before you even leave your bed:

Speaks for itself, doesn't it?

It’s your bed…
...and your bed only. There’s no fighting over who gets what side. You can make it exactly as you like, or never. You can bring out without shame the beloved childhood teddy bear you almost certainly have stowed away somewhere. You’re free to hog the covers, spread out starfish-style, and move about as much as you want without fear of sleep-punching your partner, or, for that matter, awake-punching your partner, which leads nicely on to…

You’re probably sleeping better
Much of the stuff listed above that single people can do freely, as well as snoring, getting out of bed, the heat buildup that comes from having another person under the covers with you, and having a different sleep pattern to your partner, is collectively referred to as “partner disturbance”, which is one of the most common causes of sleep disruption. If you sleep alone, not only do you have far more space (even if you have a single mattress, you’re still getting more space than if you were sharing a double mattress or even a king size mattress), but you can go to bed at whatever time suits you and wake without having been nudged, blanketless, to the edge of the bed.

That’s all.

Really, though — on Valentine’s Day, this is particularly relevant. No expensive lingerie, no cliché loveheart boxers — you’re free to sleep in your cosiest pyjamas or your shabbiest oversized T-Shirt. I’d say that’s worth the flowers and chocolate.

Your space, your rules
It can be hard to marry up your particular brand of organisation with someone else’s. Even if you’re both extremely tidy, that doesn’t mean you’re tidy in quite the same way. But when you’re single, whether you like everything neat and orderly or tend to let today’s clothes (and yesterday’s clothes, and the day before’s clothes) pile up as they may, like little satellites around your bed, you’re free to have your room however you like. You want to be greeted every morning with a poster of your favourite film star? That’s fine. Like snacking in bed? No problem. When you’re single, your bedroom is an entirely personal space, something everyone needs to escape to every once in a while.

So if you’re single this Valentine’s Day, and you spend it under the covers with a tub of popcorn and your favourite film, spare a thought for all the couples in overcrowded, extortionately priced restaurants. You never know — this time next year, it could be you!
